Earn rates

Scotiabank Gold American Express Card (Scene+ at 1¢/point — Fixed: 1,000 pts = $10 grocery/pharmacy):

  • 6 Scene+ points per $1 on Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland & more — 6% at 1¢/point
  • 5 Scene+ points per $1 on Dining, food delivery, food subscriptions, other eligible grocery — 5% at 1¢/point
  • 5 Scene+ points per $1 on Entertainment — 5% at 1¢/point
  • 3 Scene+ points per $1 on Gas, transit (rideshare, bus, taxi, subway) — 3% at 1¢/point
  • 3 Scene+ points per $1 on Streaming — 3% at 1¢/point
  • Up to 4 Scene+ points per $1 on Travel (1 + up to 3 extra via Scene+ Travel)
  • 1 Scene+ point per $1 on All other purchases — 1% at 1¢/point

The 6X line is store-specific (Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland and more). Our calculator applies the 5X grocery/dining line to general grocery, not 6X at every grocer.

The Scotiabank issuer page also states: accelerated Scene+ rates apply on Canadian-dollar purchases in Canada; foreign-currency purchases earn 1 Scene+ point per $1 after conversion even though the FX mark-up is 0%. Accelerated earn applies to the first $50,000 in qualifying purchases each calendar year, then 1X. That $50,000 cap is not stored in our earn-rate data, so our score and calculator do not apply it.

American Express Cobalt Card (Membership Rewards at 1¢/point — Fixed: 1,000 pts = $10 statement credit):

  • 5 MR points per $1 on Eligible restaurants, stand-alone grocery stores, and food delivery in Canada (Capped at $2,500/month combined spend, then 1 pt/$1) — 5% at 1¢/point
  • 3 MR points per $1 on Eligible streaming subscriptions in Canada — 3% at 1¢/point
  • 2 MR points per $1 on Gas, transit, rideshare in Canada — 2% at 1¢/point
  • 1 MR point per $1 on All other purchases — 1% at 1¢/point

Cobalt’s 5X line is a combined monthly cap on restaurants, stand-alone grocery, and food delivery in Canada. On the published spend profile, grocery + dining is under that cap.

Cobalt lists 1:1 transfers to Aeroplan, Marriott Bonvoy, and more. This site still values Membership Rewards at the issuer statement-credit rate above. We do not invent a transfer value.
